Training Week: January 23 - January 29

Week of January 23 - January 29

01-23 - [Monday] - PM: 10 miles.

01-24 - [Tuesday] - AM: 6 miles. easy.  PM: 9 miles.

01-25 - [Wednesday] - AM: 5 miles easy roads. PM:  9 miles (57:11). w/up + 4 x 1200 @ 5k pace + c/dwn.

01-26 - [Thursday] - PM: 8 miles easy roads. 50+ degrees!

01-27 - [Friday] - PM: 10 miles.

01-28 - [Saturday] - PM: 5 miles easy.

01-29- [Sunday] - AM: 20.4 miles. (2:16:51) Route details (GPS) here. Nice road loop with Matt Garfield and Andy Huebner.  Through Portsmouth, Greenland, Newington, and Kittery, ME.  Good loop over many of the area's race courses.  By my estimate we ran parts of the Eastern States, Market Square Day, Redhook, Fox Point, St. Charles, Harbour Trail, (Old) Children's Museum, Out of Hibernation, and Paddy's courses among others.  Those are just the one's I'm familiar with.  Dropped Andy off at his house at about 16.5 and then Matt and I added on over the bridge into Maine and back.  Crazy bad blister on my big toe towards the end which was a little annoying. If you dare, take a look here.  Disregard the black toenail that is about to pop off (from the VT 50 4 months ago). The blood blister is from the run today. Maybe time for new shoes... picked up some stuff at Runner's Alley after getting some coffee w/Matt and his wife and then headed back home up into the Arctic tundra.

82.4 miles on 9 runs.

Kind of a weird week. Felt like I was doing jack-sh*t but ended up over 80 so I'm definitely pleased with the outcome.  The conditions outside are horrendous for anything of any quality that I can tolerate.  I haven't slept in my own bed since probably last week. Been doing a 'sleep over' with Tabby who refuses to sleep alone and in her we've been 'camping' on the living room floor.  I've felt kind of tired all week but I managed to get in a relatively solid week with an OK workout on Wednesday and a few road runs including the long run on Sunday which kind of salvaged my mileage seeing I mailed in a run on Friday night and barely did anything.  Was good to actually get out and run with people and talk shop. I have a little bit more motivation after talking to the guys today and feeling like a real runner by actually getting out on the roads and doing an honest effort.  The good news is that the 6:42 paced effort for the 20+ miler on Sunday felt easy.  None of it felt like work at all and we (I) talked the entire time.  I feel worse on 7:30 paced runs by myself here down the street so I was glad I kind of figured out that it's just mental and not really anything physical at this point.  I may not have any speed anymore but I can do long runs which is something I guess.  I need a few more of these before April so I don't embarrass myself completely. I hope to get together w/ Matt some more and do some longer efforts.

Training Week: January 16 - January 22

Week of January 16 - January 22

01-16 - [Monday] - AM: 5 miles. Easy.  PM: 8 miles.

01-17 - [Tuesday] - PM: 8 miles.

01-18 - [Wednesday] - PM:  9 miles (56:27) as 20 min w/up + 5 x 1000 @ 5k pace + cooldown.

01-19 - [Thursday] - AM: 5 miles. Easy roads w/ Darin.  PM: no run. Work meltdown right as I was going to leave for my after-work run. Figures. Good thing I got out at lunch for something at least.

01-20 - [Friday] - zero. First zero of the year.  Was up for over 36 hrs.  Didn't go to bed on Thursday at all because of a hot customer issue and was up clean through to Friday night working on other issues and doing damage control. I could have gone out for some easy miles after work but I was so beat, I just decided to take an off day and get some rest. I had a screaming headache all day because of the all nighter and felt sick. Not a good way to end the week.

01-21 - [Saturday] - AM: 5 milesPM: 15 miles as 2.5 w/up + 10 miles in 60:00 + 2.5 c/dwn.(1:34:44).

01-22- [Sunday] - PM: 5 miles. Easy.  Squeezed in an easy/short run before it got dark once Kristin got home from her latest 4k-footer.  The awesome news is that you can head out at 4pm and easily get in a slow 5 without a headlamp now.

60 miles on 8 runs.

Week got completely derailed on Thursday afternoon with a high priority work issue. I was up completely overnight and never went to bed on Thursday.  Near-migraine headache all Friday.  Needless to say I missed my second run on Thursday (a planned 10) and then was just not able to get the rest of the week's planned quality in (including a complete zero on Friday). Running on fumes... What a nightmare.  I was happy to get in 20 total miles on Saturday with a light tempo and one decent speed workout on Wednesday.  Week wasn't a complete mess I guess. 60 miles on 6 days with most of my runs under 10 miles this week for a change.

48 days until daylight saving time.... 56 days until Spring.

Training Week: January 2 - January 8

Week of January 2 - January 8

01-02 - [Monday] - PM: 10 miles. The 'Great Plague of 2017' continues... can't believe I even left the house today.

01-03 - [Tuesday] - PM: 10 miles. Felt slightly better today....definitely no worse at least.

01-04 - [Wednesday] - AM:  5 miles  roads. PM: 8 miles (49:40).  Warmup then 8 x 600 @ 5:00 pace with about a minute in between each then cooldown.

01-06 - [Friday] - PM: 10 miles.

01-07 - [Saturday] - PM: 12 miles.

01-08 - [Sunday] - PM: 15 miles.  2.5 mile w/up then 10 miles in 60:00 then 2.5 mile c/dwn. (1:34:50).

80 miles on 8 runs.

Still sick throughout the week but not as bad as last week.  Felt much better by week's end. Didn't do quite as much as I had hoped due to work and some last minute things here and there (and being lazy)....But I still got in some solid runs distance-wise and can't really complain too much.  Somehow salvaging 80 miles is good all things considered.  Somehow I gained weight this week though...not sure how.  I'm getting old.

ANOTHER Large Copper for 2017...1803 Draped Bust found in my basement!

This morning, I went poking around again down in the small section of the basement.  I put the Garrett 5 inch Sniper coil on so I could get in the tighter areas and went back over the same area I pulled the King George III copper from on Tuesday.  I found a bingo!  My first complete Largie found detecting, and it is an OLD one!  They were only making official US coins for 10 years by 1803.

1803 Draped Bust large cent!

The obverse. 1803 solid date. Pretty worn but I'll take it!

The reverse showing the 1/100 very faint at the bottom.

How it 'should' look....

A Good Start to 2017!

Some winter detecting today in the BASEMENT believe it or not.  Literally went down to the basement at lunch for about 15 minutes and found a 1799 King George III colonial copper coin in the top soil in a small corner of the dug out area.  Since I couldn't go outside (with about a foot and a half of snow all over everything), I figured I poke around in the basement and see if anything fell through the cracks over the years from the floors above.  What a find!

This makes four 1700's coins I have found all within the last year and all within a mile of here.  3 on the property (2 outside in my backyard and 1 inside now in the basement) and one in the neighbors yard down the street.

So now I have 2 King George II (1735 and 1736) as well as 1 King George III (1799) and a 1780 Spanish half reale silver coin.

obverse: King George III - bank of England issue 1799
reverse: photo doesn't do it justice but the date is visible in the right light

What the coin 'SHOULD' look like...

The line up of my 1700s coins (so far)...1 silver and 3 coppers.

Training Week: December 26 - January 1

Week of December 26 - January 1, 2017

12-26 - [Monday] - PM: 10 miles. very light hill program. 69:47.

12-27 - [Tuesday] - PM: 10 miles. very light hill program. 69:46.9

12-28 - [Wednesday] - PM: 10 miles as 2 w/ up + 6 tempo in 35:12 (5:52 pace) + 2 c/dwn.

12-29 - [Thursday] - PM: 10 miles 64:36. Middle bunch of miles at 6:00. Getting sick.

12-30 - [Friday] - PM: 10 miles easy. Sick. Two hrs of shoveling/snowblowing then some skiing then some sledding. By the time the run came, I was a bit worn out and am battling a cold.

12-31 - [Saturday] - Headcold from heck.

01-01 - [Sunday] - PM: 10 miles easy. Even sicker. Lucky to get anything in this weekend.

60 miles on 6 runs.

The week got derailed due to bad cold I'm still battling.  I was going to race somewhere on New Years just to get the feet wet again in the faster race situations but got sicker as the week went on. I still got a decent amount of miles in but it pretty much ruined any chances I would have had at feeling good while running anything uptempo so I decided to bag it and wait another week or two for racing season to start.  The next week will be interesting as I think I'm still getting worse.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays,  and Happy New Year.

3099.2 miles for the year with 54 days off.
