Thursday - May 26

May 26 (Thursday) - PM: 8 miles roads and dirt roads/nordic trails w/ Andy at King Pine.  First 5 w/ Andy and then last 3 solo as he went for a swim in Purity Lake.  It was hot and I had to listen to Andy go on and on about all his new sponsors and all the free stuff he's getting and his VIP invites to international events this summer and how many of his drones aren't working right now and how the skiing up at Mt. Washington isn't that good anymore....but other than that it was a good run.

Then I got to swing for about 90 minutes while Kristin went 'into town'.  I had to stay in the yard because the kids were busy at work in the sandbox.  I found a few strange unidentified items but landed TWO full horseshoes right behind the 'ell' of my house.  I also found a sliver plated spoon with the mark 'Ajax silver plate' on it. It looks identical (except mine is destroyed) to this spoon as far as the design on both sides... the website says possibly the 1920s but not positive.  I also found a dime bank that was patented in 1891 (you can see other examples here).  Mine actually says 'PAT APPLIED FOR' meaning it was older than 1891.  It was full of dirt and as far as I can see, it doesn't have any dimes in it...if it did (given the timing), they would have to be 'Seated' Liberty dimes and that would be amazing...

Even though I didn't find any coins today, my buddy Kent called me to tell me he landed an 1837 large cent today down in Ossipee.  It was quite 'knackered' as he put it, but it's a largie nonetheless.  Landing a large cent is still on my bucket list...

If I had "$5.00" worth of silver seated dimes in this thing I'd be pretty excited...

Wednesday - May 25

May 25 (Wednesday) - AM: 90 minutes metal detecting (so I probably walked a half mile) then 5 miles roads.  Pretty hot out.  PM: 6 miles with a 1.1 mile hard hillclimb and then a sub 6 last mile (mostly downhill).  Was going to do some short hills but it was hot, I felt like crap, and I got stung by a hornet a half mile into my warmup (thing flew right into me at full stride and stuck in my leg) and I had to keep stopping to massage my quad.  Stung me right in the meat of the quad and the sweat was making it sting really bad.  Decided just to quasi-hammer the base of Pound Rd. up past the apple orchard (1.1 miles)... was right at 7:25 for that mile split which is entirely uphill and pretty steep for 3/4 of it.  I have no clue how much it gains but I was working decently hard.  Not all out but an honest effort.  Since I do zero hills, this was better than nothing.

As far as the morning treasure hunting session goes, I landed 15 shell casings, 6 shotgun shell headstamps, a zipper, and a 1972 quarter.  Three of the below are live rounds (unfired). There was so much ordnance in the ground up in there, you'd think World War II happened there.

Every one of these sounded beautiful but it got old seeing these pop out of the hole.

Tuesday - May 24

May 24 (Tuesday) - 10 miles roads w/ Andy. Out and back from Shackford Pass down into Freedom Village and back.

Found some interesting finds just in the yard the last couple afternoons... Today I found a fatty Indian Head cent (they made them fat from 1859-1864)...It's my 2nd "Fatty" of the year so far.  I found a 1863 previously.  I can't get the date off of it as it's pretty toasted.  I found another nice button w/ the shank still in tact and some writing on it but I can't really make it out...will have to clean it a bit more...

Yesterday I found a few things in the front yard...a funny (and big) lid to a 1950s jar of bubbles.  It was seriously 6-7 inches down. I have no idea....  It was deeper than most anything I dig but the signal was too good to pass up.  I also found a wheatie, another button with the word 'Metropolitan' on it, and a beautiful lead colonial musket ball.  The picture below doesn't do it's completely round (unfired).  It's the 4th musket ball I have found so far.  The other 3 were fired.

I also pulled some more rifle shells, a bullet, and some other odds and ends...

Monday - May 23

May 23 (Monday) - 11.5 miles roads and trails w/ Andy.  Silver Lake bang with some extended McNair exploration off Lead Mine.  Easy pace.  Pretty warm out.  Andy ran with his fuel belt on in preparation for registering for the VT 50 in a couple days.

Yesterday I took some video yesterday in the backwoods of a couple of old colonial settlements we'll affectionately refer to as '1690 North' and '1690 South'.  Only those in attendance will know exactly where it was.  I'll try to start taking some better vids of some actual finds, etc. but it's kind of hard to pull out the camera and try to take some pictures and video while trying to make the most of the time we have to's kind of a pain in the ass but I'll try to streamline it a little better next time.  This is just a short hodgepodge of video I was planning on making but really just didn't have the drive to make it happen.

In short though, I met up with acidoticRacing's own legendary Phil Erwin who just recently took the plunge into one of the most addicting hobbies out there and purchased the same machine I have (the Garrett AT Pro).  We met up with Kent 'Big Iron' Churchill at his palatial estate in Ossipee, NH and then headed out to a couple different colonial sites to battle some heat and bugs in order to save some history.  I found 3 coins but all recent (a clad quarter and a couple pennies) but I did land 6 (SIX) buttons from the 1700s-1800s. 4 with shank and 2 without... One up high at the first cellar hole we tried out and the other 5 down low on the road in.  I found my fair share of iron relics and junk but did find another nice crotal bell (my 3rd so far) at the second location we tried over at '1690 North'.  We didn't have too much time to spend at the second site as people had things to do in the afternoon so we'll have to wait a bit more before we can go back and hit it hard.

I had 8 ticks on me...pulled 5 off me before heading home and 3 on the way back in the car.

Week of May 16 - May 22 - Rock n' Race 5k and Get Fit in May 5k - Double

Week of May 16 - May 22 - Rock n' Race 2016 and Get Fit in May 5ks (Old School Double)

May 16 (Monday) - PM: 6.5 miles trails w/ Andy and Squall from Black Brook Rd.  Snowmobile trails.  Still having some chest tightness and discomfort... 
May 17 (Tuesday) PM: 11.2 miles roads w/ Andy from home up 113 to Chocorua Meadows and Tall Pines Rds just neighborhood running...then back down into Madison.  Still having some chest tightness and discomfort... still pretty concerning but I'm able to run without too much additional issue.
May 18 (Wednesday) PM: 8.5 miles trails, roads, logging roads.  From Rocky Gorge took Lower Nanamocomuck ski trail down to the covered bridge and then ran up to the gate on Passaconaway Rd. Then took that left up a logging road that climbed up quite a ways along Big Brook.  Ran to the top and then a ways down the backside before turning and running back to the bridge where I was picked up.
May 19 (Thursday) PM: 4 mile warmup in the rain on streets of Concord, then 3.2 miles (Merrimack Savings Bank Rock n' Race 5k (results- Concord, NH - 2nd OA - 16:02) then 2 miles cooldown on the roads.
May 20 (Friday) AM: 8 miles roads (moderate).
May 21 (Saturday) AM: 4.6 miles warmup on the roads (got very lost trying to follow the course) + 3.2 miles (Get Fit in May 5k (results)- Exeter, NH - 1st OA 16:04) + 2.8 miles cooldown w/ Goupil, Sam Fazioli, and DJ Ayotte.  HOT out there! 
May 22 (Sunday) PM: 6 miles very easy after 4+ hours of metal detecting in the hot sun and buggy woods...

Weekly Summary: 60.0 miles

Decent week although another week of ONLY 60 miles... I opted to take it short and easy on Sunday with 2 races (Thursday and Saturday).. old school week of 2 races...  16:02 and 16:04 respectfully.  One 2nd place and one win.  Good efforts for sure (one on the flooded streets of Concord and one on the scorching hot streets of Exeter...ok not that hot but it was definitely the hottest race of the year so far that I've run). $225 in race winnings across the 2 races in 3 days.  Just good to keep getting behind the line.

Race 1: Rock N' Race 2016 5k (results):

The race on Thursday night was a good time.  Despite the rain, it did stop right before the race went off so at least during the run it wasn't coming down.  With close to 3000 runners and maybe more than that lined up to walk, the race is one of the bigger races in the state.  I have never made it down (or up) to this race since I started running again.  I always see it in the results after the fact and never remember to put it on the schedule.  This year I figured I'd try to get down there and add it to my list of good local races that I've run.  This was the 14th year of the race (and 13th year I think it has been a 5k...with 2003's first race being a 4 miler won by Scott Clark).

I warmed up a bit doing loops of a few city blocks as I didn't know where the course went and being in the city and immediate neighborhoods, there wasn't obvious markings so I couldn't follow anything. I just ended up running around for 4 miles including some strides before the race.  I noticed quite a few decent looking runners there including Nacho Hernando and Ryan Kelly (Nacho would end up not actually racing) plus a few other dudes I know could race so I figured it would be a good pack of guys for the first mile at least...something I haven't been seeing in the other local races around here lately. &nbsp

After the Governor gave the race command and fired the gun (a short walk for her as the start is outside of her office door) we were off.  Two dudes busted out to the lead and a couple others lingered around me initially. I actually got a bad start (if there's such a thing in a 5k when you are right on the starting line) so it took me a little bit to get back up to the leader but he was definitely moving pretty well right away.  By the turn off the first street and onto the next little climb up into some neighborhood streets, I was right with the leader and everyone else seemingly blew right out the back somehow.  We were going just under 5 min pace and it didn't seem like it was going to be a quick day at all.  Even though the course rolls, there really aren't any long hills.  The biggest climbs you have are immediately followed by nice downhills.  The course is by no means a super fast course but it's pretty fair.  Still, we rolled up through and I clicked 4:57 on my watch which beeped right at the first mile marker within a stride.  I didn't know it at the time, but it was Colton Ham in front of me and he surged right before that mile mark and that was basically it. I was looking at him up ahead for the rest of the race with Ryan Kelly lingering behind me not too far back.  That was good though because it kept me on my toes at least.

The course was riddled with botchy pavement and flooded corners and puddles but it made things nice and cool for the race conditions-wise.  It was a rather odd course in that it weaves all over the place around little islands in parking lots and through the grounds of various schools/hospitals, etc.  I just kept my foot on the gas as much as I could but Colton continued to float up front and never came back at all. I tried to push a couple times and felt plain out of shape for some reason. I just felt like I had no pep but tried to maintain that distance ahead of Ryan and behind Colton.  People kept telling me on the sidelines that I could 'get him' but that's just people trying to cheer you on and keep you going. I kept looking up and noticing him looking effortless and by no means on his way back to me.

I clicked through 2 miles in 9:58 and then the third mile had some rolls and the biggest hills of the course which really slowed me down and I lost a lot of time here...Colton continued to roll as I probably would have if I was in better shape but it was just not the case.  I salvaged a 5:13 third mile and then 4:44 pace for the last .18 (had 3.18 on my Garmin).  16:02 for an official final time and a good 2nd place.

I'm definitely pleased with the race although I know I have work to do.  I need to work on my speed and strength for beginning to end. It hasn't been an issue with the last mile or 2nd mile, etc.  Generally right now it's all my miles.  They just aren't where they need to be (or should I say where I want them to be).  I'm holding it together typically for a relatively even effort and haven't been falling apart completely in any race this year but it's just not that fast.  Colton ran away to a 15:39 which even on the flattest of flattest courses (NHTI) last year, I was only 15:31 and last year I was in the best shape of the last many years for no way I could have done anything to contend with him this year on this course which is far slower than NHTI.  It was the third year in a row he's won this event which is pretty awesome considering the amount of runners it attracts.

I cooled down around the State house area waiting for awards.  Talked a bit to some folks including John Mortimer who assured me he wasn't planning on making a 40+ comeback any time soon ;)...  For my efforts I got $100 for 2nd place....another race I had no idea there was cash at, as I don't believe it was advertised so I'll take it!

Race 2: Get Fit in May 5k (results):

On Saturday, we all headed down to Exeter as I was feeling the need to race again...  Running a race on Thursday just doesn't feel quite like I got a race in for that week... I figured it couldn't' hurt to run another 5k so I opted to run the Exeter race in lieu of the Bedford 5k.  Exeter is slightly closer and there was $125 for the win... plus it didn't finish with another race (like the 12k) so I figured it was a better choice. It turned out to be a good decision as they had a very nice area for the kids to play and a lot of kids activities to keep Tabby and Morgan occupied.

I woke up feeling a little banged up and my hamstring was a little sore (ok a lot sore).  In general I felt worse than I did yesterday (the day between the two races).  It was shaping up to be very warm (just about 80 degrees at race time) and I headed out on a very slow warmup. I tried following where I thought the course went but got pretty lost. I ended up running over 4 and a half miles before I found my way back to the start and barely saw any of the course in the right direction.  I caught up with Jeff Goupil who was again trying to whore a local race that I got in the way of...  We're starting to laugh when we see each other.

On the line, I caught sight of Sam Fazioli (Whirlaway) who's coming off the Boston Marathon last month and DJ Ayotte who had just graduated from Colby Sawyer this Spring.  He was coming off a good outdoor season and I knew the top 4 of us would be in the mix.  I wasn't feeling like I could run particularly fast and figured a mid 16 may be the best I could muster given the fact that I had just raced a day and a half ago.   I got another bad start for some reason and I was suckin' the fumes from about 16 kids under 12 in front of me for the first 100 yards or so.  There was a 10 year old girl who I believe was still in the lead 200 yards in and she was crankin.  Eventually I settled into the lead and Sam was tucked in tight behind.

I kept looking back for the first couple miles as Sam was lingering.  He crept up past me at An Ras Mor in the Spring and didn't go past me until a mile in...then we battled back and I wasn't counting out a later charge from him despite him sandbagging before the race.  I went through the mile in 4:57 and then through 2 in 10:04.  I was starting to feel the heat a bit (literally).  My third mile was a 5:10 and it included a ball buster of a hill at the very end that I never saw coming. I rigged up near the top and then had all I could do roll up to the finish, again just missing going under 16 minutes... 16:04 official time... but again I was pretty pleased with the win and the effort.  The more I keep plugging away at these efforts and getting my race rhythm back, the more I will hopefully get closer to getting fast again.

I cooled down with Sam who held on for 2nd despite not doing any workouts in a month or so (I think that's two of us...but I've been racing so I guess those count), DJ, who held on for 3rd man OA, and Jeff who took one step closer to getting his groove back.  Then it was awards time where I picked up another $125 that went right into the Portsmouth Toys R Us cash register on the way home...

Week of May 9 - May 15 - Spirit of Recovery 5k

Week of May 9 - May 15 - Spirit of Recovery 5k

May 9 (Monday) - PM: 3 miles roads.  Had to run super late as I was busy with work and then my parents came over for the afternoon and dinner. Had to run after and just squeezed in 3 before it got dark.  
May 10 (Tuesday) PM: 10.1 miles trails w/ Andy from Potter Rd.  Exploring the Roberts Pond area in Eaton again + some on Potter Rd. to get 10.  Some decent climbing in there but ran relatively easy.  Beautiful day.  Found a new cellar hole off Potter Rd. that may need exploring.
May 11(Wednesday) AM: 5 miles roads going to get my car from the mechanic.  Slightly up tempo...pretty warm out. Just felt like going a little harder than usual. PM: 6 miles - hilly but hard.  It was even warmer out but I headed up 113 and then up Mooney Hill to Glines Hill and then up to Bickford Rd.  Halfway up Bickford (wooded class VI dirt road) I ran into a large black bear in the middle of the road and it wouldn't move.  I kept running towards it and it stayed there. I got about 30-40 yards away and it was just standing there staring at me.  I clapped and made a lot of loud noise but it just kept looking at me, then going back to it's business of digging something in the road...occasionally looking up at wasn't a typical encounter so I actually had to turn around and go back the other way as it wasn't keen on moving out of mine (if I got a little closer 'maybe' it would have moved but I wasn't going to find out).  Lots of climb in only 6 miles (for a road run) but I had to call it at 6 as Kristin had class so I ran a pretty honest pace.
May 12 (Thursday) - PM: 14 miles roads.  From the Ranger Station on the Kanc to just past the Lower Falls and then back.  Hot but seemed like a slight headwind both ways, which felt good.  Light progression run. Slightly faster each split on the way out (in the 6:40s/6:30s) and then on the way back low 6s to the last few under 6 min pace.  Felt completely fine cardio-wise but the legs feel a little beat in spots.  Plantar a little sore.  Hammy a little sore.  The usual.
May 13 (Friday) - PM: 8.1 miles roads.  First 5 w/ Andy and then added on.  Relatively easy for first 5 and then slightly quicker for the end because it started raining.  Got back home just in time to miss the deluge.  Had some issues later on that night and started to feel off.
May 14 (Saturday) - AM: 5.4 miles trails w/ Andy and Josh - Albany Town Forest. Was going to get out later in the day but I haven't felt that great in the last 24 hours... May have to go to the Dr.s to get some things looked at.
May 15 (Sunday) AM: 4 miles warmup on the roads (some w/ Goupil) and then 5k race (3.23 miles on my watch) - Spirit of Recovery 5k (results) in Dover, NH (16:14) - 2 mile cooldown w/ Goupil and Huppe (cut it short when we found a 'shortcut' back to the awards area).

Weekly Summary: 60.2 miles

Decent week with basically a day off (I started out on the wrong foot with only a 3 mile day on Monday and only 1 short run on Saturday but I wasn't feeling good).  The race on Sunday went well though so I can't complain with how the week ended up although I have something going on w/ my left arm, shoulder, and chest.  I thought for a day and a half I may be having heart problems and was pretty bummed about it.  The good news is that it was a non-issue in the race. I was able to push at 5k pace without any additional tightness or discomfort so that was a great sign. Bad news is that I still have it when I'm just sitting around.

I picked up some more points in the Dover Race Series. This race was another new one for me and in a different part of town so it was pretty cool .  The conditions were less than ideal.  It was very windy (not Paddy's windy but very windy) and the course rolls continuously.  It starts off slightly up, then slightly down as you roll out of an office park and then down 6th Street.  Then it drops down into another office park for a good half mile of descent (with the wind)...then it's a whole lot of uphill on the way back into the wind which was a kick in the pants.  There was some tailwind on 6th Street on the way back and then a wall of wind for the last quarter mile into the finish.  Since Huppe had the course record with a 16:54, it seemed the course wasn't particularly fast to begin with.  I went in with the goal of winning and beating Nate's record (he was telling me all week NOT to go break his record so obviously I was going) but as I was warming up, I started seeing a few guys lingering that looked like they could be a threat.  The one I was most worried about ended up being the one I should have been worried about (at least until Jeff Goupil gets his sh*t together... he knows what I'm talking about)...

As the race went off, my goal of winning took a backseat pretty quick. I got out to a good start and felt very in control and almost easy.  The pace was quick according to my watch but I kept it comfortable.  Into the wind out on 6th Street made things pretty tough. There's a downhill, then a good uphill all into a pretty blustery wind. The kid I was worried about started off relatively easy and then rolled right up on me like I was standing still. It was very reminiscent of the Run Before You Crawl race and what Kevin Greene did to me. This kid came right up on my shoulder and looked and sounded very comfortable and in control.  He commented about the wind and I had all I could do to muster back a response...but then a minute or so later I looked over and said 'yeah, good thing we have this wind with us on the way back'.   He seemed to just be sitting and waiting.  He looked very fit and very fast....and YOUNG.  I was pretty sure he was a college guy and had no clue what his plan was but it seemed like he was just feeling things out and was ready to pounce at any time.

As we climbed up the hill to the turn off 6th Street, he jolted to the lead.  He did this a couple times, where he'd move up on me, then blow past for about 10-20 feet and then I'd catch back up somehow and go past him again.  As we turned, he had a good gap on me and I thought that was it.  I was almost settling for 2nd at that point as we had a big lead on the 3rd place guy, but then I caught back up again (or he slowed down a bit).  Right at the mile mark, he surged ahead a few steps to go through at probably 5:01.  I was 5:02 on my watch, which I was elated about after that wind and the rolling nature of the first mile.  We then turned again and dropped down a half mile through a twisty office park road.  I rolled right up on him again and went past again. Probably the 4th time or so that happened in a miles worth of running.  He sat behind me for a bit and then moved up next to me, then a foot in front, then back again.  I was starting to think he was doing this to psych me out and maybe that's how he was pretty effective as I was beginning to just want him to blast away from me so I could be done with it.  Looking back now it made the race so much better. I'm not used to battling like that in these races and it was pretty cool to have that action play out as it did.

As we made it to the bottom of the hill and circled around a parking lot of a big office building, I took a step or two lead.  On the way around the lot, he was a step behind me.  I saw Goupil come down and start the loop just as we were exiting.  Immediately after taking the turn back up to start the half mile climb out of the turnaround, I suddenly had a gap.  Within 20 seconds or so I turned to see a big gap that I suddenly started to think was the decisive move...surprisingly (to my shock actually) it was MY move that made the difference. I think he started to hurt on the climb.  I felt pretty smooth but still thought maybe he'd come back on me again because he had so many times in the first half of the race...but the gap started to grow.  I clicked by another 5:02 split on my watch which I was shocked by.  With the wind and the big climb out of there, I figured it would be way slow.  By the time I reached the top and took the turn back out onto 6th street I was way out in front and pretty amazed that I had hung on.  He seemed so strong and in control for the first half and then it was so sudden that I was alone.

I had a nice drop down on 6th Street with the wind at my back but then had a decent last climb up past Nate's house (he was standing out in front cheering us on) before turning back into a God awful headwind at the end for the last 300 yards or so. A guy out on 6th street with about a half mile to go told me I had 'about 20 seconds' on the 2nd guy but I think it was more. I peeked back a few times and he looked to be struggling or had packed it in for a comfortable second.

I passed 3 miles in another 5:02 split on the Garmin.  It's weird that it took me so long to finish but the wind was horrendous at the end and the course measured out a bit long so the effort was pretty even with three 5:02 splits and in the end I came down past the finish in 16:14 for a new course record and was stoked about the time and for winning the battle (I typically lose those battles).  For a rolling windy day, running that time is promising.  Especially for the way I've been feeling.  Also a new CR by 39 seconds. For the effort I got a ginormous trophy (my first traditional 'trophy' type trophy in many many years), a medal, and $100 cash (which I didn't know about ahead of time).   The second place guy was Ben Finnigan of Dover, NH who was a Freshman in this past year at Mount St. Mary's University and he's only 19 years old!  I know I'll be seeing him again at races and it definitely won't be long before he'll be blowing my doors off.  I was 20 when he was born! Yikes.

Cooled down w/ Goup and Huppe who had already ran, but ran a little bit w/ us over the course.  5 races up and 5 down in the Dover Series... I need 7 to score so I'm pretty close.  I have 4 wins and 1 second place.  It was my 6th race in the City of Dover though this year which is crazy.  By year's end I could have a new record for races in the same town in a calendar year....

Week of May 2 - May 8 - Mom's on the Run 5k

Week of May 2 - May 8 - Mom's on the Run 5k

May 2 (Monday) - PM: 8 miles trails in the pouring rain.  Lower Nanamocomuck Ski Trail from covered bridge + the Around the Pond Loop + a loop around the Gorge parking lot + a loop around the Boulder Loop parking lot + 2 loops around the Covered Bridge parking lot.  Completely soaked.  I'm also sick.  Awesome.
May 3 (Tuesday) - AM: 5 miles roads dropping my car off and running home. Up and over E.Madison Rd. PM: 10 miles roads w/ Darin in Madison/Freedom from the beach.  Sick.
May 4 (Wednesday) 7 miles snow-mo trails in Madison/Freedom in the pouring rain...scouting out some possible cellar holes... Sick.
May 5 (Thursday) 10 miles roads.  Ran up to Darin's and then 5 on Lead Mine w/ the Doctor then ran home.  Saw Don Fredrikson HAMMERING coming the other way on Lead Mine...Made us look old and slow for sure.  Sick.
May 6 (Friday) - 10.4 miles roads.  Honest lake bang in 67 minutes.  Clicking 6:30s for most of it. A couple slower over the Lead Mine hills and a couple faster at the end... Beautiful weather today.  Leg was actually ok (not 100% but tolerable) but my OTHER calf cramped on me in the last mile. I almost started laughing.  Still sick but feeling slightly better... Had a bout of dry heaving on Friday night for some reason... felt really nauseated. It had nothing to do with watching the Cavs roll over the Hawks...just had a stomach thing going on...
May 7 (Saturday) - 3 miles easy roads.  But about 4-5 miles of metal detecting in Ossipee/Wolfeboro.  Got bit by about 6 million black flies.
May 8 (Sunday) - AM: 3.5 miles w/ up w/ Goupil + 3.2 mile race (Mom's on the Run 5k (results) - 1st OA - 15:57)  + 3 mile cooldown w Goup over some Dovah roads.  Sam Wood sighting on the cooldown.  Felt like puking on the warmup again...not sure what's up.  Felt fine during the race. PM: My best Chris Mahoney obnoxious post-win shakeout of 5.4 miles later in the day w/ Andy on the roads.

Weekly Summary: 68.5 miles

Not a bad week running-wise. No workouts but I'm a little cautious at this point with the hamstring STILL bothering me.  It's way better than last week but this is getting crazy. 2.5 weeks of hamstring issues.  That's a first for me.  Just need to keep the miles near 70ish and keep toeing the line.

The race went well on Sunday.  I headed down to the Mom's on the Run Mother's Day 5k in Dover (results).  It was the 10th running of the race.   It was pretty much ideal conditions weather-wise.  I had Jeff Goupil and a high schooler hot on my tail early.  The first quarter mile he was on me like offensive jokes on Bob Wiles' old Facebook page.  I rolled through the first mile in 4:54 although there's some drop and only a slight's a fast first mile.   Still, 4:54 isn't' bad but for the fastest split of the day it just needs to be faster.  By the one mile mark I was alone and I rigged a little just after 2 miles for some reason. I just felt like a little bit of a struggle was going on any time I had the slightest of roll in the road.  There's a couple of rolling hills in the 2nd mile and the first half of the third mile is a little slow but the second half is quick.  I was 10:05 through 2 and was pretty perplexed at how much I slowed down.  On the way back in, I was running way over pace because of the slow first section of the 3rd mile but I was pleasantly (even though I saw it on the warmup) surprised at the nice downhill and flat into the finish area. I picked up more time there and pushed hard at the end to get under 16. I went from thinking mid-16s to sub 16 in that last half mile.  When I took the turn onto the last street (Alumni Rd) I thought I'd be under easily when I saw the finish flags but misjudged the distance.  I had to reach for the line at the end.  I came through in 15:57, which just betters Rob Levey's 16:05 from 2011.  Only the last 8 years of the 10 years of the event are on Coolrunning.  The first two years were done I believe by Lancer Timing and the results have been lost in the rain.  Every other year of the race has been substantially slower. It's a certified course that's pretty fair. I had 3.18 on my watch. The downside if any was that I felt like I was working way too hard for that 15:57.  I really have to put in some work and get back to basics here if I want my hard efforts to get me back to the times I was used to running.   I just like thinking maybe I'd be 10 seconds faster on a Redhook or Cigna type of course with the similar effort there's work to do.

This was Goup's old stomping ground and he knew the course well. It was good seeing him and warming up/ cooling down w/ him and rehashing the glory days of CMS (glory days for me) from 2010/2011 ish.  He just moved back to the Dover area so he'll be hitting up more races and getting back into the swing of racing.

For the win, I got a Dick's Sporting Goods gift card but more importantly another point in the Dover Race series.  It was my 5th race in Dover this year but my 4th in the Dover Series (the Children's Museum race is in the Seacoast Series).  I had the family in tow and we headed over to Kittery, ME afterwards to do a little shopping at the Trading Post and get some lunch.

On the treasure hunting scene I actually only went out a couple times but once for any serious length of time.  Kent and I hit a few spots down in the Ossipee, Wolfeboro area and I picked up the largest buckle I've ever found plus a very interesting button with some crazy designs on it and another nice old suspender clip with some 'fancy' on it.  That was at the first place. At the 3rd place we happened on, we found 2 new (to us) cellar holes that are colossal in size.  One of them for all I know could have been an old church or meeting house or something.  It was enormous.  We had to offroad quite a bit to get up in there but once we were in there, it showed us some serious acreage to explore.  We may have to wait a bit because the bugs were just so bad.  Black fly fest for another month or so... I found another fancy button or broach thingy with a nice pattern on it and some possible gold guild.  I also found a sweet colonial candlestick you can check out in the quick video below.  Once I got back home I swung for another half hour or so in my yard and pulled a toasted Shield Nickel out of the ground.  They made them from 1866-1883 but mine is so worn that I can't make out the date. I did clean it quite a bit but it's toasted.  Being 75% copper it took a beating in the ground for that long.  That's yet another 'first' for me though... it's really time to start finding some silver though...

Week of April 25 - May 1 - Children's Museum of NH 5k

April 25 (Monday) - 3.1 miles very easy (roads and grass).  Leg is super sore and tight.  Probably doing more harm than good even trying.
April 26 (Tuesday) - off.  Resting the leg to try to salvage being able to at the very least finish the race this coming Saturday.  It also snowed all day and the roads were pretty ugly.
April 27 (Wednesday) - 8 miles relatively easy (roads and snow-mo trails).  Very hilly but easy run.  Leg was bad at the start, got slightly better, then slightly back to being bad again.  But a definite slight improvement since Monday.
April 28 (Thursday) - 5 miles trails. Pillar to Pond hogwash and a loop around Puddin' Pond just killing time and killing my hamstring.
April 29 (Friday) - 2 miles.  No go. Basically just a late day shoe test...testing out some new racing 'flats' I got.  Hamstring was just horrible and my calf was really sore.  Turned around at a mile and came home.
April 30 (Saturday) - 3.5 miles w/ up (some with Darin and then strides and jogging before the start trying to get loose) + 3.2 miles race (Children's Museum 5k - 1st OA - 16:10 (results)) + 2.2 miles cooldown with Darin over the last mile of the course.  
May 1 (Sunday) 3 miles roads and then some walking after.

Ok, the week started off cold and snowy... But it ended with it being May and having the Seacoast Series in full swing.  Summer is coming!

It was a forgettable week of training but I had a decent race. Injury was just too bad to do any real running but I wanted to salvage the 5k on Saturday.  It was the first race of the Seacoast Series and I really wanted to NOT miss another race due to injury.  That is getting pretty old (as am I).  I just basically tried to rest this week, not push too much on the leg, let it heal, and use whatever residual fitness I had to try to stay competitive and get much needed points for the Seacoast Series.  I have a bad(?) feeling that some big guns will come out for the other races and it may be tight come October so I really wanted to make sure I could get some early season points and continue towards a podium finish in the series, which hasn't happened in a while because I keep missing too many races over the last few years due to injury.

The Children's Museum of NH 5k is always the first event in the Seacoast Series and I've always been able to podium there no matter what condition I'm in.   I've run the race 8 times in 9 years (missing only 2013 where Eric Couture ripped a 15:30 CR).  The first year I ran the race (2008) it was in Portsmouth. Sam Wood dropped a big W there and I got 2nd in the only version of the race I ran where it finished in Strawberry Banke in Portsmouth.  In the 7 years its been on the dover course Ive run 3 faster and 3 slower than I did this year ... So this year was right in the middle.  This year was also my 4th win. History below...

This year I was obviously dealing with a hamstring issue that has been bothering me for the last week and a half. I'm also not in as good of shape as I was last year but I can certainly work on that.  Going into the race this weekend I just wanted to try as best I could to keep my streak of podium (top 3) finishes going and if possible, win if none of the big guns show up.  I wasn't concerned in the least about time.  I knew I wasn't in that great of shape so I just wanted to think long term and try to get through the race without making things worse.  I also had pre-registered for this race, which was a good thing.  That kind of helped motivate me even more to get down there and man up.

I warmed up w/ Darin Brown over some of the course (the first and last miles + some).  The first mile is mostly uphill with no down sections at all.  The second mile has some up, down, up again and then there's a great downhill section right during the 2 mile split.  Then one final uphill section before a long flat drive to the finish.  The course isn't particularly fast at all but it's pretty fair.  I've run twice in the 15:40s including last year.  I've also dropped a stinkbomb here a couple times so anything goes.

Just ahead of the start, I hadn't noticed anyone I thought would give me a scare (unless my hamstring really went) except for John Rogers but he's apparently still getting back into shape from what I heard after the race.  So I really thought maybe he'd either take it right away and blast one from the start or at least stick to me, feel out the race, and take it when he smelled blood in the water.

When the gun went off, I rolled up and out to the lead but wasn't really pushing all out because it was the fastest I'd run in a couple weeks and my leg was not I wasn't really confident in my current fitness to try to run a 5 min mile uphill.  That would certainly spell disaster later on.  By about half a mile in, I started to realize when peeking behind me, that I may have this one if I could keep it together.  John was hanging back there but not coming with me.  It was obvious he was running his own pace.  That still didn't mean I wasn't thinking that he'd eventually roll up on me and take me in the later part of the race though.   I went through the mile in 5:09 which is decent for this course layout (I was 5:02 last year).

The second mile starts slightly up, then drops down into a neighborhood loop before coming back out and down to the 2 mile mark.  Coming out of the neighborhood I didn't notice the balloon ribbon stretching across the corner of the road (the wind was blowing a balloon that was tied to the big wooden left-hand turn sign).  I ran right into it and it wrapped me across the face then slid down around my neck and the balloon itself caught up around the back of my head and I yanked the sign clean down with by my neck and dragged it a few feet before I was able to quickly unwind the chord from around my neck and continue on my way.  Needless to say I was not only pretty ticked at myself for not avoiding it, but I was shocked at what just happened.  I let out a choice word pretty loud and all the people coming the other way (it was an out and back course) got to witness a slight chaotic episode up in the front of the race.  Darin commented later that he noticed the sign was knocked down and dragged out on the course.  I still clipped through the 2nd mile in 5:05 (I was 5:01 last year).

The course drops pretty good after the 2 mile mark and bottoms out before climbing a couple more times (once pretty good).  I was in cruise control here and feeling the burn a little bit.  I felt slightly out of shape but not too bad.  I was pretty happy to no longer see John behind me on the peek backs and was starting to feel good about getting another win in a Seacoast race (at my age).  I clipped through the 3 mile mark with a 5:01 split (I was 4:52 last year).  I heard the announcer at that point say something like '...and he ran 15:49 last year and we're just about at that now'...I looked down at my watch and he was right.  I still had a ways to go but saw I'd run low 16 which was a pleasant surprise for me.  I figured with my hamstring maybe I'd go 16:30ish.  I ended up running a 16:10 for 3.2 on my Garmin (same as last year).  I ran the last .2 in 4:51 pace (last year it was 4:41 pace).   Up next...REDHOOK.  For my efforts, I got another 10 lobster dinners from the Weathervane.  That's over 60 total since 2008.  I've only used a few of them.

The good news is that I got the win for my 4th time at the race.  The great news is that my hamstring was no worse.  It was bad but not any worse.  It hurt more on the cooldown w/ Darin than it did in the race.  It was slightly sore during the first mile but then slowly became a non-issue.  It was probably due to all the adrenaline, etc. during the actual race.  I had to shorten my cooldown a bit to get back in time to catch the kids race.

Tabby ran her very first race(s) during the kids race.  She loved it.  She hopped in a couple different times and really was excited to have her number on and win a ribbon after the kids 'quarter mile'.

Final thoughts...after this race last year I got my stress I type this, the day after the race this year...I do not have one.  It is now May.  I've made it!
