Week of March 21 - March 27

March 21 (Monday) - PM: 10 miles roads with Andy.
March 22 (Tuesday) - PM: 8 miles roads and trails.  Lots of climbing.  Found a possible 'honey hole' of colonial settlements in my travels.  Scoped it out and will be going back in there when the weather breaks a bit more to see what I can find.
March 23 (Wednesday) - PM:  10 miles roads (64:23). Feel like I didn't run a half marathon this past weekend which is a good thing.
March 24 (Thursday) - PM: 10 miles roads / dirt roads w/ Andy. Cold and snowy!
March 25 (Friday) - PM: 9.1 miles roads w/ Andy.
March 26 (Saturday) - AM: 13 miles roads w/ Nate Huppe in Wakefield (roads/dirt roads around Lovell Lake and some Cotton Valley rail trail).
March 27 (Sunday) - Off.

Weekly Summary: 60.1 miles for the week.  All singles so it was a pretty decent week if you factor in my lack of 'lunch runs'.  Took another Sunday off as we had Easter here and there was a lot of work to be done plus I wanted to spend the morning w/ the girls rather than lonely cold miles out on roads.

My parents came home this week for the season so it was good to see them again and have them here for Easter.  I helped them move back in on Friday and we had the entire family (brother, sister, and their families) here for Easter on Sunday.

Finally struck some silver this week!  VERY limited time to swipe as the weather was crap and we were busy getting ready to host the family, etc....but I got a 1919 Mercury dime...only the 3rd year they made them.  Just missed a Barber by 3 years.... this was in the side yard almost on top of the ground...very shallow.  It's very worn and has a ding on it, but the date is solid.

Week of March 14 - March 20 - Pursuit of the Holy Grail 5k

March 14 (Monday) - AM: went to the Mill and waited 30 minutes while two people walked on the treadmills.  Finally blew out of there probably for the last time.  Time to get my own machine and figure out a place to put it so I don't have to deal with that again. PM: 5 miles with Andy and Squall on some trails in Madison.  Found basically the only place in the lower valley that has still got a foot of deep snow. It was crazy.  I never thought I'd be post-holing on a run again this year... snowed out the entire time and started to accumulate by the time we got back.  I took a bad spill right near the end of the run and hit my face on the ground.  Got covered in mud.  Awesome day.
March 15 (Tuesday) - AM: 5 miles roads in the rain.  PM: 11 miles workout with the middle as 6 x 1 mile @ 5:10 with 400 rest (7 min pace for rest)  Left leg was bothering me but I plowed through it.  Hamstring barked during the 5th one but I managed to get the planned 6 intervals in.
March 16 (Wednesday) - PM: 6 miles roads with Darin.
March 17 (Thursday) - AM: 5 miles roads and trails.  PM: 10 miles roads/trails w/ Darin.
March 18 (Friday) - PM: 8 miles roads with Darin and Nick.
March 19 (Saturday) - AM: 10 miles roads.  Warmup with DJ Ayotte then 5k race: Pursuit of the Holy Grail (results) (15:40 - 2nd OA) + cooldown w/ Derrick Hamel.
March 20 (Sunday) - PM: day off.  Felt really good after the race but felt like resetting and getting some rest in before starting another week.  Got 5 and a half hours of metal detecting in though...which is about 5 hours of walking around and staring at the ground...so I really got in a good rest day of actively standing/walking.

Weekly Summary: 60 miles for the week with 1 race, 1 day off, and 1 coin older than the United States....

OK week, good race, good workout.  I was very pleased with the mile repeats on Tuesday and then very pleased with the effort on Saturday.  Despite a little wind and brisk conditions, I managed to run my quickest 5k of the year so far.  I got SMOKED by Derrick Hamel but it's all good.  He ran a great race and broke the course record (and also PR'd).  He screwed past me just before the 1.5 mile mark (the first 1.5 miles are a big loop in some nice neighborhoods before the course drops down into Epping center and then climbs up to the Holy Grail restaurant near Rt. 125).  I just couldn't match his downhill pace but I really am happy with the run.  For my effort I picked up $75 for second.  That's $125 in race winnings (cash) in the last 2 weeks (2 second places which is starting to feel like the norm now that I'm old)... I'll take it!  Took the day off on Sunday as I had some treasure hunting to do at a new permission before the winter hits us again this week...

So on the treasure hunting scene, the week started off well with an 1876 Indian head cent recovered from the old tree stump on the north side of my house (during the week I only have time to get out for a little bit after work and running)... but then I really cut to the chase... I yanked a 1736 King George II colonial copper out of the back woods.  This was by far my best find so far... (video below the Indian).... My first thought is that it was a copper but I didn't want to say it.  I knew George II was looking left and I've seen enough videos of people pulling them out to know it could have been one....but I didn't want to sound like a jerkoff on the video so I played it cool (or at least tried to).  I never imagined there would be coins that old on my property.  I have found 1870s coins but this is 130+ years OLDER than that... crazy.  It opens up a whole new world of possibilities now for continuing to search my backyard.  My house was built in 1779 so it's definitely likely that a coin 'only' 43 years older than that would be floating around in someone's pocket. Considering the US didn't start minting coins until 1792/1793 (13 years after my house was built), it makes sense that the earliest settlers on our land would have had colonial copper coins.

And now...the find of the week....or year....

...and below, Sunday's take wasn't anywhere near as good... but I did find a decent metal toy soldier (civil war soldier) from probably the 1970s.... and a couple of brass birds (still with old string tied to them)...I found the birds many yards apart from each other.   This was in a yard of an 1800s house in Freedom, NH.  I didn't find much else (an old Hotwheels car and some other odds and ends)... a few modern coins...a bullet...etc.... There's definitely more to be had there.... next time!

Week of March 07 - March 13 - Run Before You Crawl 5k

March 07 (Monday) - AM: 5 miles with Andy and Squall in the blizzard of 2016.  Snowing hard...microspike run in the snowmo trails off Lead Mine. Andy has a fractured sacrum so it was slower than usual.
March 08 (Tuesday) - AM: 5 miles roads. Moderate effort but started to feel awful. Gorgeous day. PM: 10 miles roads.  Middle 5 with Andy nice and easy.  Felt like crap.
March 09 (Wednesday) - PM: 10 miles (64:00). Felt like crap again.  Really dragging and zero energy.
March 10 (Thursday) - AM: 5 miles roads. Bypassed PM run. Feeling run down but not sick...just tired...not sure what's up.
March 11 (Friday) - AM: 5 miles roads with Darin. PM: 5 miles roads easy with Darin.
March 12 (Saturday) - AM: PM: 10.2 miles as 4 w/ up over course (+ strides and staying loose) then 5k race (Run Before You Crawl 5k - results) (2nd 16:18) then 5k cooldown over the course again.
March 13 (Sunday) - PM: 10.4 miles road with Darin.  Lake bang easy.

Weekly Summary: 65.6 miles for the week.

Not a great week as far as the way I felt for most of it and for no workouts and for a lot of shorter runs and lower mileage... however I had a fairly good race on Saturday down in Dover.  The times were a little slow but the course was a beast as far as 5ks go.  3 good hills (one long and one very steep) really slowed down the day. I ran the course as a warmup and was thinking I'd struggle to run 16:30... people were laughing at me when I was indicating I was going to just 'try to break 16'...  I ended up running shoulder to shoulder for about 2 miles with Kevin Greene and ended up running only 5 ticks behind him to the tune of 16:18 for 2nd place in a field of 933.  It was also a little breezy as well and seemingly bad on the long slow climb during mile 1.  The guy who won is a 3:44 1500 / 4:04 miler who graduated from UNH last year.  We ran side by side for just under 2 miles and during that steep climb up to the 2 mile mark he put about 8 or 9 seconds on me.  I caught him back a little on the downhill during mile 3 but couldn't close any closer over the last slight uphill bit to the finish.  My effort was better than last week's 15:51 on a pancake flat course for sure.  Definitely moving in the right direction.  I know the effort on a flat course would have been definitely faster than my An Ras Mor time last week... Got $50 for 2nd (I didn't even know there was money at the race).  Took Kristin and the girls out shopping in Dover to a few places and had some lunch with the family before heading back home...

The GREAT news is that the ground (for the most part) is thawed now (at least around my property).  I went out for a couple hours on Sunday after cleaning the yard and popped 2 old buttons (one with a design on it, the shank still in tact, and some gold guild) and three coins.  One of the coins was a nice 1927 wheat cent and the other was my second oldest coin found so far and that was an 1878 Indian head cent.  I knew it was an Indian when I popped it out of the ground. It was so caked with green and took me about 45 minutes to clean enough to make it out.  I rubbed the back too much and the 'one cent' started to pit away which is really annoying... but the front and the date are decent for the age and the fact it's been in the ground for God knows how long...

Week of February 29 - March 06 - An Ras Mor 5k

February 29 (Monday) - AM: 5 miles easy (flat roads) w/ Andy.  PM: 10 miles (hilly roads) w/ Andy.
March 01 (Tuesday) - AM: 5 miles roads.  PM: 6 miles.
March 02 (Wednesday) - AM: 5 miles.  PM: 10 miles - workout.  2 mile w/up in 14:00 and then 3 x 2 mile (@10:30) with 3:00 rest in between.  37:30 for 6.8 miles and then last 1.2 miles as a cooldown.  Last year on this day I did 4 of these only a few seconds slower but with far less rest.  I could have done another tonight but I scaled back a bit and opted for 3 slightly quicker but with a slightly longer rest.  I've been feeling a little beat over the last few days so I decided on just getting in 10 (60:28 for the 10 including the w/up + cooldown + and 'rest')... not bad.  Not a great 5k workout, but nothing can save me now.
March 03 (Thursday) - AM: 5.25 miles w/ Andy and Squall.  Easy run on the frozen tundra off Lead Mine w/ microspikes. Not sure why...just mixed it up a bit.  Beautiful sunshine but COLD!  Was going to get out later but opted to play My Little Pony instead.
March 04 (Friday) - AM: 5 miles.  PM: 8 miles roads.
March 05 (Saturday) - AM: 6 miles easy roads.
March 06 (Sunday) - AM: 11.6 miles (roads - Cambridge, MA) as 4.0 m w/up with K.Gorman and EJN (including strides) and then 5k race (An Ras Mor 5k - USATF-NE 5k Championship) (15:51 - 46th) and 4.5 m c/down with MacKnight, M.Quintal, and Nate Huppe.

Weekly Summary: 76.85 miles for the week.  Tried not to overload the miles this week and it felt like I ran nothing but short easy runs (other than the workout) but I still landed at near 80 so I'll take it.  Definitely a hard effort for the 5k on Sunday.  Harder than I've run in months so it was good to get the lead out.  I ran just about where I thought I would (15:51 chip time in a ugly starting situation a few very tight rows back).  I thought I'd be around 16:00 or just under...  I split 5:00 / 5:02 / 5:08 for the 3 mile splits and then 41 for the last .16.  Felt like I was laboring too much at 5 min pace but I didn't completely fall apart.  Managed to run fairly even though.  Had a slight kick at the end to pass 3 guys (that had passed me earlier in the race) on the last straightaway, so I had some fight in me.  After just about a mile and a half or so in, I never really got passed and just held my ground until passing a few guys near the end and some scattered carnage in the middle.  Definitely would have liked to run faster but it's only March 6...I've done really next to zero '5k' workouts and have just been doing miles and some half-marathon/marathon paced stuff... So to go under 16:00 with those types of splits in March...I'll take it.  Now I know exactly where I stand and can start targeting some workouts so I can keep up with some guys I should be keeping up with.

As far as the GP goes, the CMS men won with a great 15:10 average for the top 5.  I was 7th guy. I had thought 7th or 8th would be about where I'd be and I was right on.  I would have had to run 15:28 to score (that was Scott Leslie's 5th place CMS finish).  I'm not there yet...I'll run that this year, but just not anytime soon.  By that time though, Scott will be running 15:00 :). So it won't even matter.  It was great seeing the team do so well, in such a good field.  I was proud to be at least part of it, though I think I may be just biding my time before I join the masters team.... To 'celebrate' (and to break up the 5 hours I had to spend in the car total today to go to/from Cambridge, MA) I got a chocolate covered donut at Dunkins on the way back.  It was beautiful.  Now...on to Spring.

The side yard is starting to look like Spring on Sunday afternoon!  Tabby's snowman has seen better days. Hopefully this is all gone after this week.
