Stalled Out Completely - Quick Update

Ran just about 3 miles yesterday in intense pain and shortness of breath because of my back....and today managed to run for 2 minutes up the street before having to stop and walk back home.  My back is so bad now I need to go see someone about it and am having to scratch New Bedford again for the 2nd time in 3 years.  I have no idea when I'll be able to get back into it.  Eastern States is now a couple weeks away..hopefully I can be back running by then.

  1. Hey dude, sucks that you can't run NB, but there are plenty more races to run and you want to be healthy for them. Take the time required to get better and try not to let it bother you too much.

Like Scott said, take the time and get it right. Plenty of racing time ahead.

  3. Jim, Take it easy. I've had my share of back problems over the years and thankfully they were all muscle related. It make take a week or two but get the rest you need for your back. If you don't rest your back, it could take much longer. There are plenty of races in the year so missing a couple shouldn't really matter in the big picture. Take care buddy.

  6. Quit whining you wimp. I fractured my back and still raced up Mt Mansfield! With your lousy attitude you'll never get running.

Now that I've said that.....seriously see a sports med Doc, don't mess around with your back.

    Sending good vibes your way.....

  7. JJ, 2 years ago I threw my back out while biking on a Saturday. After crawling around for 3 days I finally broke down and went to the emergency room where they told me it was am muscle pull and I needed to lie down for 2 weeks to rest my back. Right after the doctor told that I asked him...."Is it OK if I run up Mt Washington on Saturday"? The doctor just shook his head and said "you're a runner, that means you're not going to lie down, are you"? Well I didn't lie down I went to the rock pile and had the worst race of my life. The picture of me at the finish line is priceless, it looks like I'm about to cry.

So, do the smart thing and take a break. Boston will still be ready for you come April 20th.

  8. I second what Scoty said. My back has been an issue for 30 years because I never took care of it when I should have. Do the right thing, rest and see a doc if it doesn't improve. There are plenty of races to run. Get healthy first.
